Dr Dicle Kortantamer co-organises workshop on recovery and renewal of the region affected by the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake disaster

Date

The devastating earthquakes on the Turkey-Syrian borders in February 2023, prompted the convening of a multidisciplinary and cross-sector team of experts and scholars in late May. This initiative was sponsored by the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences International Mobility fund, and co-organised by Dr. Dicle Kortantamer (Leeds Centre for Projects researcher and lecturer) with Kalkınma Atölyesi (a local cooperative that has been active in the region since the first day of the earthquake).

The focus of this workshop was to develop guidance on the post-disaster infrastructure recovery and renewal of the earthquake affected region in Turkey. The workshop brought together scholars from urban planning, sociology, structural engineering, political science, innovation, and project studies as well as representatives of local third sector organisations and research companies across Turkey and beyond.

The workshop generated recommendations that will be captured in a report. Kalkınma Atölyesi will share this report with policymakers, third sector organisations, universities, and construction companies. Other outputs from Kalkınma Atölyesi can be found via the attached link (https://www.ka.org.tr/). Our thanks to all participants for their contribution these strategic planning and recovery efforts at this most challenging time.
