Joseph Watton attends IAEA’s International Conference on Nuclear Decommissioning in Vienna
Joseph Watton, PhD candidate at University of Leeds, recently attended the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) International Conference on Nuclear Decommissioning, held in the Vienna International Centre from 15th–19th May 2023.

Joe’s research is focused on benchmarking and cost reduction in nuclear decommissioning projects. Representing the Leeds Centre for Projects, he attended this globally recognised conference in order to discuss his research with the nuclear decommissioning experts in attendance. These members ranged from practitioners from around the world to the esteemed members of the IAEA. Having expanded his network, he now has the opportunity to progress the proceeding stages of his research project.
He also had the opportunity to meet with members of the British Embassy in Vienna thanks to the sponsor of his research, the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
Before returning home to Leeds, he ensured his first visit to Vienna was equally worthwhile, exploring all that the beautiful city had to offer (mainly its best beer gardens but also one or two tourist attractions).
