At the end of July 2026, Kris Moodley, Senior Lecturer in the LCP, has retired after more than 30 years at the University of Leeds. Kris has had a big influence on how construction and project management developed at the University and has held various positions in the School of Civil Engineering (SoCE), including Director of Postgraduate Education and Programme Leader of the MSc in International Construction Management and Engineering.

At the SoCE retirement celebration, our Director Prof Christine Unterhitzenberger was asked to give a short valedictory speech which we share below.

"Kris, I don’t really know what to say because we will really miss you. So, to give me a starting point, I asked some of my colleagues and alumni of what comes to their mind when they think about their experience of working with you. And I would just like to mention a few words which came up:

  • Living Wikipedia – your knowledge about Leeds, our programmes, the subject area is unmatched and will be dearly missed
  • Wise Nestor, the King of Pylos – a mythical hero in the Iliad who is a guiding figure and frequently offers advice
  • Excellent teacher; Excellent programme leader; Excellent support to colleagues
  • Valuable guidance and support throughout the studies – approachable, always willing to talk, encouragement, insights, thoughtful

And I think these words really sum you up, Kris. You have some outstanding qualities which characterise you: you are collegial – we always knew that if we need something, we can count on you and we can come to you for guidance; you engaged in academic citizenship – you step in if something is needed and you are generous in sharing; you were always focused on doing the right thing in the grand scheme of things – and not what gives you personally an advantage.

Project and construction management would not be what it is today here at Leeds without your significant contribution and leadership over the last three decades. Thank you for your dedication to our subject area and for laying the foundations that has allowed us as the ‘new team’ to flourish.

We wish you all the best – most importantly health and happiness – for the next chapter in your life. Enjoy the golf, the travel, the connecting with people and please stop by for a coffee from time to time."

Yesterday, we went out for lunch together to celebrate this occasion. Thank you Kris from everyone at the LCP and SoCE for everything you've done.
